Beat the Summer Boredom

Have Lunch with a Friend

By Regeana Canada, publisher of Macaroni Kid Edwardsville-Glen Carbon, IL June 6, 2019

The kids and I ventured out to the Free Lunch Program at the Granite City High School. It was nice to enter a cooled cafeteria and to be greeted with a friendly hello from the cafeteria workers. To my surprise, the cafeteria was filled with kids attending summer school, kids participating in summer camps, and kids that just needed a meal and a place to cool off.

The kids were given 3 meal options: cheeseburgers, cheesy bits, and Bosco sticks along with green beans, fruit cocktail, and white or chocolate 1% milk. Parents have the opportunity to purchase lunch for $3.

The visit ended up being a win-win for the kids! Because they ran into some of their friends and teachers. This could be a good playdate where a child can get a hot meal in a cool cafeteria and spend some time with a friend.

The program through the School ends June 26.

The best part for me, as a parent was that one of the cafeteria workers thanked us for coming. Imagine that? Getting thanked

I want to personally THANK Granite City High School and the Granite City CUSD9 Food Service Department for trying to ensure that no child has the opportunity in the Granite City, Madison, and Pontoon Beach area to receive a hot meal.
